Because marine surveying is unlicensed by the state, anyone can print business cards, hang up a shingle, and use the title Marine Surveyor. Most times the only assurances a customer has that a surveyor possesses even the minimal necessary knowledge and qualifications are the credentials he/she is able to demonstrate. NMMS maintains the following memberships and positions:
International
Association of Marine Investigators-Certified Marine Investigator
Society
of Accredited Marine Surveyors-Accredited Marine Surveyor
American
Boat and Yacht Council-Standards Accredited
National
Fire Protection Association-Member
BoatUS/Technical
Exchange-Member
NMMS sets itself apart from its competitors by sending its
surveyors to almost 200 hours of classroom and field instruction over
45 days of training in Yacht and Small Craft Marine Surveying at the
Chapman School of Seamanship. There, students live on campus, perform
surveys, and earn standards accreditation from the American Boating and
Yachting Council. They also gain membership in the Society of Accredited
Marine Surveyors, and are listed in a directory of qualified marine surveyors
used by the insurance industry. And continuing education requirements insure
that your survey employs the latest boating industry standards and professional
techniques. Professional
techniques, latest boating industry standards, and continuing education
equal quality results.
